Your day begins before sunrise with a pickup from your hotel in Cusco. A comfortable ride will take you to Ollantaytambo, where you’ll catch one of the early trains to KM 104—the starting point of the 1 Day Inca Trail. As you step onto the Trail, you’ll feel the energy of centuries-old pathways and the excitement of discovering something truly special.

In a few hours, you’ll arrive at Wiñaywayna, a striking Inca site that showcases remarkable stone terraces carved into the mountain. This is the perfect spot to rest and enjoy a picnic lunch while taking in the panoramic views of the cloud forest.

Recharged and ready, you’ll continue onward until you reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). Nothing compares to your first glimpse of Machu Picchu from this vantage point, especially in the softer afternoon light. After soaking in the views, you’ll enter the citadel and follow Circuit 1, which lets you see some of Machu Picchu’s most famous angles and stone structures.

As evening approaches, you’ll take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, the charming town at the foot of Machu Picchu. From there, you’ll board a train back to Ollantaytambo, then a private vehicle back to Cusco. Expect to arrive around 9:30 pm, tired but thrilled by the day’s achievements.

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is one day enough to see Machu Picchu?
Yes, one full day is enough to visit Machu Picchu and experience its main highlights. With Circuit 1, you’ll enjoy the best panoramic viewpoints of the citadel and explore the most famous areas.
If you wish to spend more time or visit different circuits (2 or 3), we recommend staying overnight in Aguas Calientes and booking an additional entrance for the next morning.

How fit do I need to be for the Inca Trail?
You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be in moderate physical condition. The Short Inca Trail includes some uphill sections and is located at high altitude, but most travelers complete it comfortably at their own pace. Regular walking, hiking, or light exercise before the trip helps a lot.

What if I have problems with the altitude?
It’s normal to feel the effects of altitude in the Andes. To minimize symptoms, we recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before starting the hike to acclimate properly. Stay hydrated, eat light meals, avoid alcohol, and consider coca tea or altitude medication if needed.

Can I book the Inca Trail last minute?
We do not recommend last-minute bookings, as permits for the Inca Trail (1-Day and 2-Day) are limited and often sell out months in advance, especially from May to September (high season). To secure your spot, book early through Peru Trekkers.

What happens if it rains during the trek?
The Inca Trail operates year-round, even during the rainy season. Bring a light poncho or waterproof jacket, especially between November and March. The weather can change quickly, but the scenery remains stunning, with lush green mountains and misty landscapes around Machu Picchu.

Can children join the Inca Trail?
Yes, older children (from 8 years and up) who enjoy hiking and nature usually do very well. We recommend families discuss specific needs or fitness levels with our Peru Trekkers travel specialists to plan a safe and enjoyable experience.

Are tips expected for guides and drivers?
Tips are not mandatory, but they are highly appreciated. A small contribution is a great way to thank your local guide, driver, or support staff for their dedication and professionalism during your Inca Trail or Machu Picchu tour.

Should I bring extra cash on the Inca Trail?
Yes, it’s always wise to carry some Peruvian soles in cash for snacks, drinks, souvenirs, or small expenses in Aguas Calientes or along the route. ATMs are available in town, but not along the trail.
